The options

  • External venetian blinds: tilting aluminium slats to control light and shade.
  • ZIP screens: a fabric held taut in side channels, filtering sunlight while keeping the view.
  • Motorised control with a wall switch, remote or Somfy smart home control.

External blinds to keep heat out

An internal blind stops the light, but the heat is already inside the room. An external blind blocks the sun before the glass: the room stays cooler in summer, without air conditioning.

How to choose

  • Plan the blind when you order your windows so the box fits neatly.
  • On large glazed doors facing south or west, external venetian blinds are often the most effective choice.
  • Motorised control is strongly advised beyond a certain width.

How the price is worked out

Blind type, size, fabric or slats, and the motor matter most. Our guide to window prices explains each factor.

Frequently asked questions

External venetian blinds or roller shutters?

External venetian blinds let you fine-tune the light with tilting slats while keeping a view outside. Roller shutters block light completely and insulate more at night.

Are ZIP screens wind resistant?

The fabric runs inside side channels, which makes it much more stable in the wind than a standard awning blind. The exact limits depend on the model.

Do external blinds really keep a room cooler?

Yes. They block the sun before it hits the glass, so less heat enters the room than with internal blinds or curtains.
