Types of sliding patio doors
- Lift and slide: the panel lifts, then glides. Very airtight, suited to large sizes and heavy glass.
- Tilt and slide: the panel moves out, then slides parallel to the frame. Good seal, easy to operate.
- Slim-frame aluminium sliding doors: as much glass and light as possible, for contemporary houses.
uPVC or aluminium sliding doors
uPVC gives very good insulation on a sensible budget. Aluminium allows slimmer frames, very large sizes and any RAL colour.
What to plan for
- The threshold: low or flat for easy access.
- Sun protection: a roller shutter or external blinds, decided at the time of ordering.
- Security: reinforced hardware and laminated glass on the ground floor.
- Motorised opening is possible on some large sliding doors.
