White roller shutters on a house façade

Solar or mains-wired electric roller shutters: which to choose?

A solar roller shutter works without an electric cable, thanks to a small panel and a battery: it is the simplest option when renovating. A mains-wired electric shutter is connected to the power supply and suits new builds or major works well. Both work by remote control and can be linked to Somfy home automation.

Solar roller shutters: who are they for?

  • Renovations, when there is no electric cable at the window.
  • No building work: no channels cut into the walls, no electrician.
  • Sunny façades, although a cloudy sky is enough to charge the battery.

Mains-wired electric roller shutters: who are they for?

  • New builds or full renovations, when the wiring is planned.
  • Very large glazed openings with heavy shutter curtains.
  • Central control from a single main switch.

Home automation and remote control

Both options can be fitted with Somfy motors and linked to a home automation hub, so you can schedule opening and closing or control them from your phone.

Our advice

When replacing windows, the simplest choice is often a shutter box fitted on top of the window with a solar motor. In new builds, mains wiring remains the most robust option. See our roller shutters and external blinds.

FAQ

Do solar roller shutters work in winter?

Yes. The panel charges the battery even on cloudy days, and the battery is sized to run for several days without sun.

Can an existing manual roller shutter be motorised?

Often yes, depending on the condition and type of the shutter box. We check during the visit.
