Replacing wooden windows with uPVC or aluminium

Replacing old wooden windows with uPVC or aluminium clearly improves insulation and puts an end to regular repainting. If you want to keep the look of wood, woodgrain finishes are available. Whether the new window goes onto the old frame or the frame is removed completely is decided at the measurement visit, depending on its condition.

Why switch from wood to uPVC or aluminium

  • Insulation: a new window with triple glazing insulates far better than an old wooden window with single glazing or early double glazing.
  • Maintenance: no more sanding or painting, a simple clean is enough. See our guide to uPVC window maintenance.
  • Airtightness: new seals put an end to draughts.

Keeping the look of wood

uPVC windows are available with a woodgrain finish, and aluminium windows can be powder coated in a wide range of colours. For an older house, you can also choose a different colour inside and outside.

Fitting onto the old frame or full removal

With wooden windows, the condition of the old outer frame decides the method. If it is sound, the new window can be fitted onto it. If it is damaged or rotten, removing it completely gives a longer-lasting result. Both methods are explained in our guide to window installation methods.
