Window installation methods: retrofit, full frame replacement and more

When replacing windows, a retrofit installation keeps the old outer frame and fits the new window inside it, quickly and without major work. A full frame replacement removes everything, for better insulation and more light. In new builds, windows are fitted on the inner face, in the reveal or in a check reveal, depending on the wall and insulation.

Retrofit installation into the existing frame

The old outer frame, fixed into the wall, stays in place. It is checked, then the new window is fitted inside it and the joints are covered with trims.

  • Pros: quick, clean, little finishing work, no damage to the walls.
  • Cons: slightly less glass area, and the old frame must be sound.

Full frame replacement

The old window is removed completely, outer frame included. The new window is fitted directly into the masonry, with new airtight seals.

  • Pros: better insulation, more light, completely new seals.
  • Cons: more finishing work around the window.

Fitting on the inner face, in the reveal or in a check reveal

These terms describe where the window sits in the wall, mainly in new builds or major renovations:

  • On the inner face: the window is fixed against the inside face of the wall, ideal with internal insulation.
  • In the reveal: the window sits within the thickness of the wall, between the two faces.
  • In a check reveal: the window rests against a rebate built into the wall for that purpose.

FAQ

Does a retrofit installation reduce the glass area?

A little, because the new window sits inside the old outer frame. On a standard-size window, the difference is small.

Does the façade need redoing after a full frame replacement?

Usually not. The finishes are made good around the window, inside and sometimes outside, without touching the rest of the façade.
